Frontline presents a personal biography and political history of John McCain and Barack Obama as told by those who know them best.

It is one of the most memorable presidential elections in decades. It is a race that pits the iconoclast John McCain against the newcomer Barack Obama; the heroic former prisoner of war against the first African American major party nominee. For two hours, The Choice examines the rich personal and political biographies of these men and goes behind the headlines to discover how they arrived at this moment and what their very different candidacies say about America.

My Debates

The Commission on Presidential Debates has partnered with MySpace to create a new Web site, www.MyDebates.org.

On Tuesday, October 7, one of the three 2008 Presidential debates between Senators Barack Obama and John McCain will be held at Belmont University in Nashville, TN.

This debate will be a town hall format moderated by Tom Brokaw. The moderator will call on members of the audience as well as select questions submitted online.

All questions submitted will be sent to Tom Brokaw for consideration in the Town Hall debate.

Submission deadline for the October 7 debate is October 3.

Sneak peak at Sen. McCain’s Rehearsal

Central Library was in the center of the RNC action and we were able to get a sneak peak at Sen. John McCain while he got a feel for the stage and podium that he would use to give his acceptance speech Thursday evening.

Mark Halperin back with library staff

Mark Halperin, author of TIME.com’s The Page, was part of the Saint Paul Public Library’s Saint Paul-itics series Monday Aug. 18. We caught up with Mark again at Key’s Cafe early Thursday morning after his interview on MSNBC’s Morning Joe show. We got in line at 6:30 a.m. Thursday, but it was worth the wait to participate in the live broadcast with many other residents/visitors. Tom Brokaw (photo below) was also there on Thursday morning…it was a great day in Saint Paul!

Library staff gathered outside Central library which is across the street from Rice Park where MSNBC is broadcasting live throughout the day. Staff have been busy welcoming guests and providing historic tours during the convention. It has been an exciting place to be!

Nora O’Donnell on MSNBC Main Stage in Rice Park

Today, I had the pleasure of viewing a live MSNBC broadcast in Rice Park. Nora O’Donnell was on the Main Stage from 10am-11am and 2pm-3pm today interviewing various professionals on what their views are on the election and what they have to say about McCain’s vice president decision.

MSNBC staff handed out free hats and t-shirts while viewers watched live in Rice Park.

We spotted these characters at the corner of 6th and Wabasha in downtown Saint Paul:

MSNBC is broadcasting from Rice Park across the street from Central Library, and while coverage of Hurricane Gustav has cut into some of the wall-to-wall coverage of the RNC, we’ve still got a front row seat to some national coverage.

During the convention, downtown is still open for business and the scene on the street is getting more interesting by the minute!

Convention Countdown

Not in 116 years has the city of Saint of Saint Paul hosted this magnitude of an event and not in my short two years of living here has there been so much excitement and buzz around Central Library. Since we’re in the thick of it, we’d thought we’d try and give a “library’s eye view” of the action over the next week so we’ll post our impressions, photos and a resource or two for you here.

Our guest for the week, MSNBC have started to arrive and we’re looking forward to sharing our spaces with them. Having just toured the Xcel Center, I can tell you that is looks like it could be hosting the Academy Awards. I’m not sure Wild fans would recognize it.

While the Central Library (and all library locations) will close for the long Labor Day weekend, we will reopen on Tuesday and we’ll be helping locals and visitors alike find the information and directions they need.

I couldn’t be more proud of my city and our library right now. The view out of my office window, while always spectacular, looks particularly festive.
