I attended the “informal” launch event for his new book at the Wesiman, which was really a great experience. People from all walks of life got together to hear Harry talk about how regular people can (and have been) realizing the power they hold within themselves as citizens and using it to create grassroots movements to bring about change on both small and large scales.
At their blog, the folks at Center for Democracy and Citizenship examine moments where ordinary people accomplish extraordinary results when they band together and decide to change the status quo. In working with Harry and the staff of his center, I’ve been turned into a believer in civic engagement and public activism–we can make the world the way we want it to be. We just have to get out there and do it.

I was excited to hear about Harry Boyte’s talk at Hillcrest but dismayed to learn that the date conflicts with National Night Out. Certainly there will always be scheduling difficulties, but I had hoped that a community organizer and activist would have been more aware and respectful of this important event.
